Syrups and creamers are often used to enhance coffee and coffee-based drinks. But what’s the difference between them and which one should you choose?
Coffee creamer is used as a substitute for milk or cream. They may contain added flavors but are primarily used to enhance the mouthfeel and taste of the coffee. By comparison, syrups are sweet, flavored liquids made with sugar and water. These are primarily used to add sweetness and flavor.
Because of these differences, coffee creamers and syrups have their own benefits and drawbacks and work best with different types of coffee drinks.
If you want to learn more about coffee syrups vs coffee creamers and when it’s best to use them, keep reading!
What’s The Difference Between Coffee Creamer And Coffee Syrup?
Both coffee creamers and syrups are used to enhance coffee. However, there are two main differences between the two.
- In how they affect the coffee’s mouthfeel
- In how they affect the coffee’s flavor
Texture | Flavor | |
Coffee Creamer | made to imitate the consistency of milk or cream | creamers will dilute the coffee’s natural taste and may add additional flavors or sweetness |
Syrup | primarily made of water and won’t affect the coffee’s mouthfeel | syrups are primarily used to add extra flavor and sweetness without weakening the coffee |
Because creamers and syrups enhance coffee in different ways, they’re also made differently and appeal to different types of people.
But there’s much more to syrups and creamers than how they affect your coffee. Let’s take a closer look at each one to see what makes them unique.
What Is Coffee Creamer?
Coffee creamers are milk substitutes that enhance the flavor and texture of coffee.
Creamers are either sold as liquid or powder and are typically made from water, sugar-based sweeteners, and vegetable oil.
A quick look at the ingredients list of a standard coffee creamer will show that they’re heavily processed and don’t contain much dairy.
However, there are some brands (like Nestle Coffee-Mate Natural Bliss) that do make creamers as natural as possible. These natural creamers usually contain actual milk or cream instead of processed ingredients.
What Is Coffee Syrup?
Syrups are primarily used to add flavor or sweetness to a drink. However, unlike creamers, syrups are used in a variety of drinks and recipes.
Also, all syrups are liquids made from water, sugar, and added flavors, so they’re generally less processed than creamers. But sugar-free syrups may contain artificial sweeteners.
Does Coffee Creamer or Syrup Have More Flavors?
Generally, syrups have a wider range of flavors than coffee creamers. However, not all syrup flavors are suitable for coffee.
The reason is that syrups are made to be used for other things besides coffee like cocktails, ice creams, and other recipes.
By comparison, creamers do have a lot of flavors, but the range is more limited. For example, you’ll find chocolate, snickers, and cafe mocha flavored creamers, but these are all really variations on one flavor.
So, while you can find many different flavors of syrups and creamers, the actual range of flavors you’d mix with your coffee is somewhat limited.

When Should You Use Coffee Creamer Or Coffee Syrup?
In general, creamer should be used if you’re looking to enhance the mouthfeel of your coffee, dilute its strength or add specific flavors to your coffee.
On the other hand, you should choose coffee syrup if you don’t want to change the coffee’s texture or make it weaker, but instead, want to add a specific flavor or additional sweetness.
Is Coffee Syrup Healthier Than Coffee Creamer?
Syrups tend to be made from water, sugar, flavors a,nd preservatives. While creamers are made with more processed ingredients like sugar-based sweeteners, vegetable oils a,nd other items.
However, there are some sugar-free syrups that are made with artificial sweeteners and some creamers that are made with all-natural ingredients.
So, the healthier choice depends on your criteria and which specific syrup or creamer you’re buying.
Can I Make Coffee Creamer At Home?
You can easily make several flavors of your own coffee creamer at home.
While you can find different recipes online, a basic recipe for vanilla creamer (from food blog Natasha’s Kitchen) is to combine
- 1 part half and half,
- 1 part sweetened condensed milk and
- 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
But you don’t have to stick to vanilla creamer. You can easily create any flavor of creamer you want by simply adding the extract of your choice.
Chocolate creamer can be added by using chocolate powder, and you can easily thicken your creamer as much as you want by adding starch to the recipe.
There’s really no limit to the flavors you can make and homemade creamer has the added benefit of being much more natural and healthy than the store-bought options.
Can I Make Coffee Syrup At Home?
You can easily make your own flavored syrup at home as well.
To make a basic vanilla syrup, gather
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 1/3 cup of water and
- 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Start by combining the water, sugar, and vanilla extract in a pan and stir over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved.
Once the sugar is completely dissolved and the mixture is bubbling, turn the heat on low and let it cook for another 1 to 2 minutes. After the mixture is cool, store it in a jar or bottle.
If you want to try different flavored syrups, you can replace vanilla extract with any other extract. Or if you prefer, you can add in spices such as cinnamon or nutmeg.
As with homemade creamer, there’s no limit to the number of flavors you can create. And your own syrups will be more natural than what you can buy in the store.
What Can I Use Instead Of Coffee Creamer Or Syrup?
You don’t need creamers or syrups to add flavor to your coffee. Instead, you can add herbs and spices to your coffee grinds or directly into your brewed coffee.
By doing this, you can avoid adding additional sugars or processed ingredients to your coffee. Additionally, herbs and spices tend to have health benefits that you won’t get from creamers and syrups.
Here are some herbs and spices that are commonly added to coffee:
- Cinnamon
- Cocoa powder
- Cardamom
- Clove
- Ginger
- Nutmeg
- Cayenne Pepper
- Tumeric
- Rosemary
