What Is Turkish Coffee?

Turkish coffee surrounded by coffee beans.

Most of you coffee drinkers probably know a lot about Turkish coffee already, but for the reader who’s new to it, what is it, and what makes it special?

Turkish coffee is a style of coffee that originated in Turkey, which is a country in southeast Europe.

The difference between this brew and other types of coffees is the preparation method. Turkish style coffee requires that fine coffee grounds be boiled in a small pot called a cezve or ibrik until it forms a thick frothy liquid.

The result is an aromatic, flavorful coffee that is very strong; it can be more than twice as strong as the typical brew.

Although Turkish coffee may not taste like what you’re used to if this is your first time trying it, there’s a good chance you’ll quickly grow to love it.

What Is Turkish Grind?

Turkish grind is the type of coffee grind needed to brew Turkish coffee. The coffee beans are so finely ground that they’re the consistency of flour and even finer than espresso grind.

This is why the key to making a good cup of Turkish coffee is having the right grinder. You need a grinder that can grind beans to the consistency of flour to make proper Turkish coffee.

But the sad fact is that most coffee mills on the market aren’t built for making Turkish grind. If you use a normal grinder and end up with a grind that’s too coarse, your Turkish coffee could end up weak and watery.

You definitely don’t want that!

My recommendations for a Turkish coffee grinder are the Zassenhaus coffee mill, Javaprese, or Khaw-fee manual coffee mills.

Can I Use Any Grinder For Turkish Coffee?

No, most grinders don’t have the right grinding mechanism to create the fine powder needed for Turkish coffee.

So, out of all the grinders out there, how do you choose the best grinder for Turkish coffee?

To answer this question, let’s talk a little about grinders in general. There are two main types of coffee grinders, blade and burr grinders.

Blade Grinder

Blade grinders are electric grinders and use rotating blades to chop the coffee beans into pieces. This method is effective for regular coffee, but there’s no way a blade grinder can get that fine powder grind you need for a cup of Turkish coffee.

Burr Grinder

Burr mills use a grinding mechanism made of abrasive, spinning disks (called burrs) to crush the beans into different sizes. This means they’re adjustable and are the only type of grinder that can grind for Turkish coffee.

Burrs can be either electric grinders or manual, but nothing is better than a manual grinder for grinding your beans into fine powder.

Why?

Because electric grinder that can handle Turkish coffee grind tend to be bulky and expensive. And unless you’re going to grind a ton of beans every day, a huge, costly machine might be too much.

If you’re trying to find the best Turkish coffee grinder, your best bet will be to go for a burr manual grinder, or “spice mill” grinder.

What’s The Best Type of Grinder For Turkish Coffee?

The best (and most popular) choice for a Turkish grinder is the manual burr grinder or mill grinder.

A mill grinder does take some effort to use but it has no issues getting the right grind size you need for your Turkish coffee.

It also minimizes the heat applied to the beans during the grinding and it’s much more affordable than an electric burr grinder!

If you’re looking for the best but most budget-friendly option, a manual mill grinder is your best bet.

Can I Make Turkish Coffee Without Buying a Turkish Coffee Grinder?

Yes, you can make Turkish coffee without a grinder by buying pre-ground beans or grinding them at a local store or coffee shop.

This is a great option if you want to try Turkish coffee before investing in a new grinder.

Here are a few things you can try before you go out and buy a Turkish coffee grinder.

Buy Your Beans Pre-Ground

Luckily, there are a few commercial coffee brands out there that make Turkish ground coffee.

Check out Kurukahveci Mehmet Efendi Coffee. The coffee is imported from Turkey, and produced by the largest and oldest coffee company in Turkey.

If you want to try a cup of authentic Turkish coffee before investing in a grinder, then give this brand a try.

Grind Your Beans At A Store Or Shop

Alternatively, you can grind your coffee beans at a store that offers the service.

Some stores (like Costco) have an electric grinder available for use after you make your purchases. These grinders have the option to grind extra fine. And some cafes will even grind your beans for you if you ask.

The upside is that this option doesn’t require you to buy any equipment. Your coffee grounds will also be as fresh as possible! The downside is that it’s less convenient if you don’t have a store nearby that lets you grind your own beans.

Which Type Of Beans Are Best For Turkish Coffee

When it comes to coffee beans, there are two factors to keep in mind – the roast level and the origin of the bean.

Let’s talk about the roast level first.

Roast Level

The best roast will depend on your own personal taste, but keep in mind that Turkish coffee is boiled.

And boiling extracts much more flavor.

So, if this is your first time making Turkish coffee consider starting with a light or medium roast because it will have more flavor than you might expect. And if using dark roast, your brew will taste really strong and bitter.

Also, keep in mind that Turkish coffee is enjoyed in many different countries and each country has their own variations when it comes to coffee.

For example, in Greece, they tend to make coffee with a lighter roast than in Turkey.

Bean Origin

Since Turkish coffee refers to the coffee brewing methods, the origin of the bean isn’t too important. But the beans most often used are high-quality arabica beans that were grown in Brazil or Central America.

How Do I brew Turkish Coffee Once I Have My Ground Beans?

Ok, so you’ve got your finely ground beans…now what?

If you want to prepare Turkish coffee the traditional way. You’ll need a special coffee pot, called a cezve.

(If you don’t have a cezve, you can use a small pot instead.)

1) Take your cezve and add cold water. For each cup of water, add 2 teaspoons of fine coffee grounds (or about 1 gram of coffee for every 10 grams of water). Sugar to taste.

2) Stir the contents of the cezve continuously then place on low heat. Don’t stir while the coffee is brewing!

3) Allow it to brew just below boiling temperature until foam build on top of the coffee. Once foam appears, remove it from the heat and scoop the foam into your cup and place the cezve back on the heat. Once your brew begins to boil pour the remainder into your cup and enjoy your Turkish-style brew!

After brewing your coffee let it cool for a few minutes before drinking to enjoy the flavors. And keep in mind that Turkish coffee has grounds at the bottom, so drink it carefully!

What Is A Cezve?

A cezve is a small pot with a long handle used to brew traditional Turkish coffee. They are usually made out of brass or copper.

Although the name cezve is of Turkish origin, this long-handled pot is known by several names such as the ibrik, briki and the jezve.

Cezves are typically used in Turkish homes, but they are also popular with coffee drinkers who want to brew coffee quickly on the go without needing a bulky machine.

Is Turkish Coffee The Same As Greek Coffee?

Turkish and Greek coffee are prepared using the same brewing method. They’re both prepared by boiling fine coffee grounds in a long-handled pot.

Only the cezve, as it’s called in Turkey, is called a briki in Greece.

There may be some slight regional differences though. For example, in Greece, a lighter roast may be used.

Can I Use A Turkish Grinder For Espresso?

Most Turkish grinders are adjustable, so there shouldn’t be any issue using a Turkish grinder to grind for espresso.

But, I don’t recommend using an extra-fine grind for espresso. The reason is that the finer the grind, the more coffee is extracted during the brewing process.

Brewing espresso with a fine grind would result in an over-extracted and bitter cup of coffee.

Can You Brew Turkish Coffee In A French Press?

The short answer is “No”.

You can’t make Turkish coffee in a french press because it requires a cezve or small pot in order to boil the coffee over a heat source.

French presses, on the other hand, aren’t made to sit on a stove or fire. They’re simply containers that allow the coffee to steep.

Why Is Turkish Coffee Strong?

A Person pouring Turkish coffee in a white coffee cup

Turkish coffee has a very strong flavor because of the extraction of coffee beans in the boiling water.

If you prepare it with light-roast coffee beans, expect your coffee to be stronger than expected because of the high extraction. And if you prepare it with dark roast, expect it to be very strong and bitter.

Is Turkish Coffee Stronger Than Espresso

Turkish coffee is stronger than espresso in terms of taste. This is because Turkish coffee is boiled which extracts more of the coffee’s flavors. Espresso, on the other hand, is pulled through ground coffee beans under pressure.

However, in terms of caffeine, espresso has a higher content than Turkish coffee.

Is Turkish Coffee Bad For You?

Turkish coffee has pros and cons for your health.

On the one hand, it contains a high amount of caffeine and is generally taken with sugar, which isn’t good for your health.

On the other hand, it has antioxidants that can make Turkish coffee healthy in moderation.

In addition, Turkish coffee may have spices added, which can provide additional health benefits.

Why Does Turkish Coffee Taste Different Than Regular Brew?

The taste of Turkish Coffee is a result of finely ground coffee beans and sugar, which have been boiled together for several minutes.

On the other hand, coffee that’s been brewed on a drip coffee machine is made by passing hot water over a bed of coffee grounds.

The amount of coffee solubles and flavors extracted by boiling is much higher than the flavors extracted by other coffee brewing methods. The paper filters used in drip coffee machines also affect the final flavor of your drink.

What Kind Of Beans Should I Use For Turkish Coffee?

You don’t have to use a specific type of bean when preparing Turkish coffee. You can use your favorite coffee bean and it’ll be just fine!

Turkish coffee depends only on the size of the grind. Not the origin of the bean, or roast type.

Why is Turkish Coffee In Sand?

Turkish sand coffee is simply Turkish coffee that’s brewed using hot sand instead of on a fire or stove.

For this process to work, sand is placed in a large metal pan and heated over an open flame until it reaches the desired temperature.

People use sand because they can control the brewing process more easily, as well as maintain consistent heat. Also depending on the size of the pan, multiple cezves can be heated at the same time, which allows you to brew multiple cups of Turkish coffee at one time!

The Bottom Line

Whether you’re a coffee aficionado or just the occasional coffee drinker, Turkish-style coffee is something that we think everyone should try. It requires more work than your typical morning brew but it also has a richer taste.

To make this traditional drink at home, first make sure you’ve got the right grinder for the job. We’ve recommended some of the best Turkish coffee grinders with a reasonable price tag.

If you’re just starting out, try a manual grinder like the Zassenhaus manual coffee mill or the JavaPresse Manual Coffee Grinder. These mills are adjustable, so they can grind extra fine for Turkish coffee or coarse for your french press.

Go ahead and give it a try! And be sure to let us know how it goes in the comments below!
